Ok, so there has been a vacant store that I’ve been sorta obsessed with since joining flickr in 2005:

Caldor builds urban focus with N.Y. units – opens stores in Flushing, New York, and Bronx, New York, New York” The store opened in 1994 and was four levels.

From the article:

Its regional nemesis, Bradlees, has plans for a Brooklyn store, but that unit will not open until 1994.

The Flushing store included some merchandising that seemed designed especially for a city store. The women’s department, for instance, featured gold lame and other evening style dresses–not common in most suburban Caldors.

Here is a photo of the Caldor in 1994.

I’ve read recently that finally something is going on at the old Caldor.

I’ve been looking all over on Flickr tonight to see if anybody ever had the chance to get inside of there when the store was still vacant. I haven’t found anything yet.

What are peoples memories of this store?

  1. It closed down when I was 8 years old… I remember that I used to go there a lot with my mom. We shopped there lots and it was very big. There used to be this gum ball machine I loved to get gum from for only 25 cents. We would also dress up and take professional photos there on special occasions as well.

  2. When I was young, Caldor was already closed and the remnant building was vacant for a while. Thankfully now, it is being put to good use and a mall
