Found all of these on microfilm while researching my thesis (The Civil Liberties Act of 1988) last year through the NYT microfilm.

(seriously, this just c&p’d off of my online journal from 2008)

It’s a little movie called Career Opportunities. Or, as I like to call it, “the movie that takes place in a Target.”

That’s how I found this movie one day after school way back in 1998 while flipping through the channels (as I would do after school since we didn’t have a computer back then). I got hooked into the movie due to it taking place in a Target, and I loved seeing what Target used to look like back in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s (we didn’t even get Targets in this part of Va until 1996). It gave me the warm and fuzzies because back then Target looked a lot like the discount stores we would shop in at night when I was a little kid. Years ago, I had mentioned this movie to a friend, but I told him that I had forgotten the title of the movie, and I had only seen it once on TV. He automatically knew what movie I was talking about and he said that he liked it a lot too since he was a Target freak. A few days ago he sent me a “feel better package” and it included a copy of the movie.

I love seeing all the old products that I remember mom buying when I was little, like Leggs pantyhose eggs, and

…. CABOODLES. omg, this was the best scene in the movie. I have the light purple and dark purple one, the bigger one on the center shelf.

Also note the Jovan Sex Appeal box Josie is holding. Back when I was able to shop at the BX while waiting for mom at the Commissary, I’d always go over to the cologne section and smell the Sex Appeal.

Caldor, Queens, NY, closed 1999

Ok, so there has been a vacant store that I’ve been sorta obsessed with since joining flickr in 2005:

{From Flickr user XISMZERO, who also runs The Caldor Rainbow}

Caldor builds urban focus with N.Y. units – opens stores in Flushing, New York, and Bronx, New York, New York” The store opened in 1994 and was four levels.

From the article:

Its regional nemesis, Bradlees, has plans for a Brooklyn store, but that unit will not open until 1994.

The Flushing store included some merchandising that seemed designed especially for a city store. The women’s department, for instance, featured gold lame and other evening style dresses–not common in most suburban Caldors.

Here is a photo of the Caldor in 1994.

I’ve read recently that finally something is going on at the old Caldor.

I’ve been looking all over on Flickr tonight to see if anybody ever had the chance to get inside of there when the store was still vacant. I haven’t found anything yet.

What are peoples memories of this store?

My 1991 Group of Localish commercials

From a Gone With the Wind tape of my mom’s from 1990 or 1991.

Includes several dead chain mentions in a Master Card spot, and Food Carnival, which was I think Farm Fresh’s short foray in a discount grocer?
