Starbucks: Suffolk, VA

Last weekend, I drove out to Suffolk, since I hadn’t been to Suffolk since 2005. There is a new little shopping center across from the junky shopping center (the one that has the Big Lots, Goodwill, Citi Trends, Sears Satellite store, etc. in it). This new tiny shopping center has a Tropical Smoothie Cafe, and Alltel, and a Starbucks. Perhaps, the deaddest Starbucks I have ever been into.

Starbucks, Suffolk, Va

I can’t fathom why this place was dead on a Saturday. I guess due to the fact that country folk don’t "get" Starbucks? I was the only sit down customer this place had, I was there for about 30 minutes just relaxing, because I hadn’t been out of the house all week since this is a time between graduating from community college, and waiting for my Summer job to start. I only saw five customers the 30 minutes I was there. Two women ordered typically “girly” sugary drinks, and this one guy came in to buy a to-go cup, and told the barista the rumor that Starbucks hates troops. The barista told him that it was an email myth, and that Starbucks just sent thousands of pounds of coffee to the troops. Yup, typical ‘kountry stuff.

While I was there, I saw that they had some of the coffee syrups they use behind the bar for sale. I picked up honey for $6:

Too bad. This is a really nice starbucks with a couch and nice chairs and a patio.

  1. Hey Anita,

Just checking in on your site. My sister went to a mall recently in Rocky Mount, NC. Apparently there was another dead mall in that area that might be totally torn down now. I think its name started with a ‘T’.

Ironically, I frequent this Starbucks — anytime that I am on 58 or have to goto the Suffolk campus, I am sure to stop by here. Not sure why it was dead, it certainly isn’t the most busy Starbucks I’ve been to, but there have been times where plenty of the patio tables were taken when I went in. However, there have been other times where most of the customers just get the coffee and leave.

What I cannot figure is why they have two soo close together — the other one is at the Farm Fresh up the street, and there is another one (I think its a booth only) at Obici.

    Hows the summer going?

  2. Oh and one more thing — the staff at that Starbucks is probably the best I have ever seen. They have always been extra friendly and will go the extra mile to make my drink just right!

  3. Zak, The mall in Rocky Mount you are referring to is Tarrytown Mall. It has already been demolished and replaced with a Sam’s Club. Tarrytown was virtually destroyed by hurricane Floyd in ’99 (Flooded all the stores out) when it sat in a couple of feet of water from the Tar River for a few days.. The mall was demolished around 2004 or 05 I believe.
