From Mike Hepp of the Penn Cann Mall website.

Also note the listing for Buckroe shopping center, that was one of the first shopping centers I remember going to growing up. We went there frequently up until I was in hmmm….middle school? Then it got a bit dreary. I had NO clue that an A&P used to be at Buckoe. It seems like when we started going to Buckroe (late ’88, early ’89?) the store was a Giant or a Farm Fresh?

  1. Could the A&P at Buckroe have become a Super Fresh rather than a Farm Fresh? I believe that Giant Open Air was gone from the Peninsula as a trade name by the time the directory was published.

  2. Nope, I woulda remembered a Super Fresh there. After the store I can’t remember, there was some local (?) chain called Nick’s Market, and then IGA, and then Be-Lo (not to be confused bith Bi-Lo), and then Fresh Pride I think.

The Woolworth’s in that Buckroe shopping center turned into a Family Dollar in 1994, and I think in 2005 that part of the shopping center burned down.

  3. Aha. Nick’s Market was a Farm Fresh brand. They had a few in Richmond, some of which had been Siegel’s and other brands but there were some Farm Fresh locations that were rebranded Nick’s. Most later bacame IGAs as Farm Fresh sold them to local operators.
