Christmas Eve and Christmas, 1973

This was the shopping center across the street from Nemarket North Mall . (well, the photo was taken before the mall was opened)The shopping center is still open, but it’s kinda seedy now. None of the original tenants remain.

  1. Rose’s? Am I seeing right? It’s hard to imagine Rose’s without its current logo.

  2. Yup. Roses was originally in that shopping center before it moved across the street to a newer shopping center in the 80’s, I assume? I’m not sure when Newmarket Plaza Shopping Center opened.

  3. Just an idea, but if you had a complete photocopy of the Newport News section of that “1988 East Coast Mall Directory”, you’d know when Newmarket Plaza opened.

Searching for copies of the “Directory of American Shopping Centers” has been on my flea market/antique store list for a while, but with no luck. I was able to get a photocopy of the Richmond and Petersburg pages of the 1964 edition through the kindness of one of my web acquaintences. Unfortunately, my copies don’t include Newport News.
