Howard Johnson Finally Decides To Run A Commercial

This summer I saw the first Howard Johnson motel/inn/whatever they’re calling them now commercial on TV for the first time since 1996. I was telling my buddy Brian (who is a Howard Johnson freak) this over the AIM, and he had oh-so-conveniently made a video clip of the commercial, and sent this to me over AIM. I have decided to make some screen shots of the ad, and snark on the ad.

I will give whoever did the ad “mad props” on the graphics of the ad, those look nice, but right away in the ad, the voiceover artist (who was only doing her job) says this:

“Howard Johnson-from 28 flavors of ice cream to 475 flavors of hotels”

Ok, all of the Howard Johnson(s) ice cream shops have been dead and buried for years. They knew not to mention the hundreds of restaurants that have died too through the years (only 5 remain as of August of 2005) due to mismanagement. And there were a lot more than “475 flavors” of hotels just 10 years ago. In fact, the Williamsburg, VA highrise HoJo just lost its name a few months ago, I was just by the HoJo reserveration site 2 months ago to see how many remained in VA, and there was a listing for a highrise in Williamsburg, its gone now.

 The hotels they show in the ad are brand new HoJo’s, they wouldn’t dare show the old timey motor lodges because most of them that are still under the Howard Johnson name (or lost the Howard Johnson name in the 80’s or 90’s but got it back again in the 2000’s) look pretty bad these days.

I mean at least they’re trying, but I think they put up with an effort a little too late.

In closing, they show this girl at the end of the ad, she scares me:

I’ve seen a longer version of this ad on The Food Network where it praises its office equipment/presentation rooms Howard Johnson has now.

  1. The commericail design is great, the curent logo, not so great. It’s generic and ugly.
